Surveyor Meets Noongar Woman

Unique natural pigments on paper. 30 x 46. 2023

Natural pigments found at this actual site inspired this painting. Framed in gold wood with glass The old jarrah tree on the right has bark gradually closing over a surveyor’s sign. This might come from around 1860’s.The sign is still legible. The jarrah tree on the left symbolises a woman of the Whadjuk Noongar people.  How would they have communicated? Is it still the same today. I collected and treated from this site; clay, soil, ash, charcoal, marri nuts, tree bark. I had to add acrylic blue as it was water soluble. Marri gum from another site gave the rich brown colour With frame, matte and glass.
